Southeast Iowa Clinic Offers Genetic Testing

By Ellis Codjoe, December 07, 2018

Local residents that suspect they have a genetic condition or are concerned that they may pass along a genetic disorder have an option to alleviate their worries.

Pella Regional’s Medical Clinic in Ottumwa boasts one of only a few locations in Iowa that have genetic testing available, according to a press release. The first step is filling out a questionnaire to determine if a genetic test must be administered.

The testing itself involves a lab draw and a phone call with a genetic counselor to discuss next steps. Most tests are covered by insurance.

Karen Turk, Manager of Pella Regional’s Clinic said in a statement:

“Many patients come in requesting genetic testing because a loved one had some form of cancer, whether it’s breast, ovarian, gastric, pancreatic, colon. Genetic testing has potential benefits whether the results are positive or negative. The testing can provide a sense of relief from uncertainty and help people make informed decisions about managing their health care.”
