Southeast Iowa Boy Dies in Fire

By Ellis Codjoe, February 16, 2019

An Oskaloosa boy has died and his mother suffered injuries in a Friday night fire.

According to a Facebook post from the Oskaloosa Police Department, fire crews from Oskaloosa and New Sharon were called to 515 High Avenue East after receiving word of a structure fire with the possibility of a child in the basement.

Firefighters arrived on scene but their attempts to enter the home were nullified by smoke, heat and low visibility.

After the flames were knocked down, firefighters were able to gain entry and seven-year-old David C. Fogle was found in the basement. The boy was removed from the structure and transported to the hospital where he died from injuries sustained in the fire.

The mother, Angelia D. Wells, received second degree burns to her forearm, neck and ears as she was attempting to rescue her son before she was driven outside due to the heavy heat and smoke. Two other children, ages six and nine, were sent out of the residence by Wells and were not injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
