Scam Targets Food Assistance Recipients

By Ellis Codjoe, October 15, 2018

The Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) issued a press release warning of a scam directed towards those receiving food assistance.

There have been reports of text messages being sent to individuals who use electronic benefit transfer (EBT). These messages tell the recipient that their EBT funds are expiring and an immediate deposit is needed. It then asks them to clink on a link to “apply” for benefits and then requests personal information.

According to the DHS, the state of Iowa never utilizes mobile messaging to share information with EBT recipients. The DHS advises recipients to not click on the link or provide any personal information.
