Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign Kicks Off

The Salvation Army kicks off its annual Red Kettle campaign today and organizers say volunteers are needed.

Joel Arthur, Envoy of The Salvation Army in Ottumwa says the familiar red kettles and the accompanying bell ringers will be appearing in front of Ottumwa businesses and will remain there until December 24th. The kettles will be out Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM this holiday season.

Arthur says thanks to generous donations, Ottumwa’s Salvation Army was able to surpass expectations last year.

“last year we raised $42,000 in our red kettles which i thought was excellent,” Arthur says. “we were pretty nervous going into last year with all the restrictions and covid happening.”

Arthur says this year’s goal is $50,000. Any money donated stays in the community, according to Arthur and the funds are used to help the needy in different ways.

“Rental assistance or with utility assistance,” Arthur says. “We save money back to help those that need Lodging such as if they experienced a fire in their home.”

Anyone wishing to volunteer to ring a bell next to the red kettle can register for a 2-hour shift at or call The Salvation Army in Ottumwa at (641) 954-8131.
