Roy Canaday

Roy L. Canaday, 80, of Douds, Iowa passed away on September 23, 2019 at the Iowa City Veteran’s Hospital. He was born on February 9, 1939 in Rural Douds, Iowa to Ernest and Fern Scearcy Canaday. Roy spent four years in the United States Air Force where he was awarded Airman of the Month and served overseas in Okinawa, Japan. After his honorable discharge he married Charlene Koogler on June 11, 1961 at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds. Roy and Charlene lived in Douds and together raised three children; Todd, Kim and Mark. They recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.

Roy was known for known for his welding skills which he learned while enlisted in the Air Force. He was an artist with the welder and welding torch, creating ornamental railings among other things. He also worked for the Rock Island Railroad and together with Charlene served as custodian for the school in Douds for 23 years. Roy was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, served on the Leando Cemetery Board, and a member of the Douds Community Club. He and Charlene enjoyed wintering in Texas and camping, together they also liked to dance. Most of all Roy loved spending time with his kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His family will remember his amazing smile, patriotism and loyalty to his family.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene Canaday; a son, Todd (Kandi) Canaday of Ottumwa; a daughter, Kim Long of Ottumwa; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Amy Canaday of Malta, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Fern Canaday; a son, Mark Canaday; infant granddaughter, Briana Canaday; five siblings, Eileen Kunzman, Clarence Canaday, Lucille Fletcher, Velma Brady, and Earl Canaday.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 27, 2019 at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, Iowa with Rev. Olympia Marcos officiating. Burial with military rites will immediately follow the service in Leando Cemetery. A visitation will be on Thursday, September 26, 2019 with family present to greet friends from 5 – 7:00 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home – Douds. Memorial contributions in Roy’s honor may be made to the Iowa City Veteran’s Hospital or Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, Iowa.
