Robert “Bob” Dean McNeal was born on March 8, 1934 in Murray Iowa and was the 8th child born to John Curtis McNeal and Malissia Jane “Gertrude” Watkins McNeal. Robert passed from this life Monday, August 10, 2020 at 12:15AM at 86 years of age.

Bob attended Murray public schools, and graduated from Murray High School in 1952. He then went to work for the Soil Conservation Service in Clarke County until 1956, when he served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, when he was honorably discharged, receiving the good conduct medal. On May 23, 1959 in Chariton Iowa, he was united in marriage to Viola Ann Proctor. Two daughters and two sons blessed this union, and they lived in the Walnut City/Centerville area for the past 51 years.

Bob was employed with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service for 30 years in the following Clarke County, IA, Kingston, MO, Higginsville, MO, Lucas County, IA, and then in Appanoose County, IA, until he retired in 1984. Bob had many things he enjoyed, but especially enjoyed fishing with his friends and family, gardening, raising grapes, softball, and spending time with his family. He loved playing softball on the Mystic Merchants team in Mystic for many years when he lived in Walnut City.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roland McNeal, Donald McNeal, Myron McNeal, George McNeal, Harold McNeal; sisters Marilyn McNeal, Dorothy Dinham and Annie Guthrie; and Granddaughter Samantha Rexroat.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Viola McNeal of Centerville; his daughters, Katharine Newman (Earl) of North Carolina, Vicki Rexroat (Randy) of Centerville; his sons, Anthony McNeal (Tammy) of Centerville, James McNeal (Julene) of Earlham; granddaughters, Melanie (Nathan) Johnson of Moravia, Elizabeth (Sam) Huey of Huxley, Iesha McNeal of Centerville, Brandi Rexroat of Centerville, Krisha Greene and DeShann Rexroat of Springfield, Mo, Eva and Rowan Fisk of Earlham, Janna (Hank) Cole and Kimberly (Mike) Robbins of Virginia; grandsons: Robert (Searra) McNicholas II of Yulee, Florida, Dwight and Nathan McNeal of Centerville, Alexander McNeal of Earlham; 13 great grandchildren; his brother, John Curtis (Glenda) McNeal Jr. and lots of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM, Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Danny McNeal officiating.  Burial will follow the service at Haines Cemetery, north of Centerville.  Visitation will take place Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 6:00-8:00PM.  Memorials may be made out to Viola McNeal, to help with final expenses, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home C/O McNeal family, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com.
