By Ellis Codjoe, May 28, 2019

Phyllis Pickering, age 90, of Unionville, Missouri, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2019 at the Putnam County Care Center, Unionville, MO.

She was born to W.E. (Elwin) and Mary O. Probasco Cullum on July 25, 1928 in Unionville, Missouri. She lived in Unionville her entire life and firmly believed it to be the best place on earth. She married Jack W Pickering in June, 1945.

Phyllis was a homemaker by profession and loved her career. The well-being of her family was always her priority. Creativity and an eye for design were her second nature. She loved the thrill of the hunt and the company of like-minded friends on countless antiquing expeditions. A pro at restoring and refinishing her antique furniture finds, she could always find room for one more piece in her home. She designed and created much of her own and her daughters’ clothing.  Her yard reflected her love of nature, color and design through her landscaping and tender loving care.

She loved Jesus, family, and friends, and was a member of the First Christian Church of Unionville from her teenage years. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and Women’s Bible Study, helped with Jet Cadets, drove the Vacation Bible School bus, made countless covered dishes for church dinners, funerals and gatherings. Her favorite activity was studying the Bible and the history that surrounded it. She enjoyed lively, thoughtful theological discussions, while she continued to seek deeper understanding.   Phyllis cherished many lifelong friendships. She was a woman of deep conviction, an unwavering faith, staunch loyalty and steadfast love.  She will be dearly missed. She loved her life, while she looked forward to meeting her Lord face to face.

Phyllis is survived by her three children, Jack J (Phyllis) of Unionville, Cinda Wood (Ron) of Joplin, MO, and Melissa Sibert (Dave) of Olathe, KS. Grandchildren are Maverick Pickering, Trevor Pickering, Ryan Wood, Jason Pauley, Susannah Pauley, Sarah Helm, Christy Burns and Danny Sibert, eighteen great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack, and brothers, Bill Cullum and Bob Cullum.

Celebration of Life will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, June 1, 2019 at the First Christian Church of Unionville, Missouri.  A visitation will take place at the First Christian Church from 10-11 AM, Saturday.
