Pedestrian Struck and Killed on Highway 34 Near Albia

An early-morning accident on Wednesday killed a man who stepped in front of a vehicle on Highway 34 east of Albia.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 23-year-old Zachary Bates walked into the westbound lane of traffic on Highway 34, stepping into the path of a Chevrolet sedan. The driver hit the brakes and swerved to the left, but was unable to avoid hitting Bates. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident happened near 6935 Highway 34, about three miles east of Albia, just after one in the morning. Neither the driver nor a passenger in the car were injured. The State Patrol says it’s unknown why Bates walked into the westbound lane, and the crash is still under investigation. Bates’ body was transported to the state medical examiner’s office.
