Patricia Louise Shaffer


Patricia Louise Shaffer of Ottumwa passed away on Monday, November 22, 2021. She was 88. Patricia, or “Patty Lou” was born in Eldon, Iowa in November 1933 and was raised in Eldon, and attended Eldon High School where she graduated in 1950. She married in 1953 and was a devoted military wife for the remainder of her life. Pat was someone whose life was centered around the Christian Church of whatever area in which her family lived. She served as the Sunday pianist for worship services, and was also a celebrated Sunday school teacher who taught the preschool class at Joppatowne Christian Church in Joppa, MD for two generations. She was often enlisted to arrange flowers for the communion table, which was another passion of hers. She served as the church’s secretary and treasurer for a number of years before relocating to Ottumwa after she and her husband retired.

She leaves behind her husband of 68 years, Donald Stephen Shaffer, her son, Mark Stephen Shaffer (Denise), of Oakfield, WI, daughter Jean Marie Trask (Thomas) of Newport News, VA, and daughter Beth Anne Strittmatter (Michael), of Joppatowne, MD. She also leaves behind six adoring grandchildren: Lauren Ashley Breedlove (David) of Kodak, TN, Amelia Trask Anthony (Bradley) of Yorktown, VA, Joseph Benjamin Trask, (Rebekah) of Newport News, Mack Stephen Shaffer of Milwaukee, WI, Melody Kate Strittmatter of Joppatowne, MD, and Justin Lee Strittmatter of Joppatowne, MD. Pat was also a great
grandmother to three great grandchildren, Aubrey, Paisley, and Blake Anthony.

She was preceded in death by three of her children, Sue Elaine Shaffer, Barbara Ann Shaffer, and Lee Andrew Shaffer.

The family will celebrate her life at Eldon Christian Church on Friday, December 3, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Dave Bowden will be officiating. She will be buried in the Eldon Cemetery next to her children immediately following the service. Memorial contributions in Patricia’s honor may be directed to the Eldon Christian Church.
