The Ottumwa Community School District is looking for volunteers to help with its summer meal program.
Yvonne Johnson, Director of Food and Nutrition Services, says meals are being distributed to students and their families but help is needed to package food.
Johnson says the bulk of the help is desired on Monday through Wednesday from 7:00 AM to noon. On those days, volunteers would be packaging food in the kitchen at Ottumwa High School. Some 9,800 sack lunches are made each week.
The distribution of meals is done on Thursdays at various sites in Ottumwa, according to Johnson. Volunteers are welcome to help in this effort too from 10:00 AM until the day’s work is finished.
Anyone interested in helping or recruiting volunteers can contact Johnson at (641) 777-8195. Johnson says volunteers don’t have to work the entire shift. Working just a couple of hours would be a great help.
