Ottumwa Police and Fire Departments Hiring

By Ellis Codjoe, January 12, 2018

The Ottumwa Public Safety Departments are both in search of applicants.

The Ottumwa Police Department is currently seeking new police officers, while the Ottumwa Fire Department hopes to hire two new firefighters.

The Ottumwa Police Department currently offers a salary ranging from nearly $46,000 to nearly $61,000. Officers receive two weeks of vacation after the first year and three weeks of vacation after five years.

Minimum requirements include: at least 18 years of age, citizen of the US, good moral
character, Iowa Driver’s License, uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100, or
corrected to 20/20, good physical condition, normal hearing, normal color vision, ability to pass a rigid background investigation.

Applicants will undergo a series of screening tests which will result in the final selections. The initial testing will be comprised of the following: written examination, physical agility testing and oral board interview.
Applications Accepted: January 8 – Feb. 2, 2018 (4:30PM) Testing Date: Feb. 23, 2018

The top finalists will be required to return at a later date for additional testing, including polygraph, MMPI and medical examinations.

Meanwhile, the Ottumwa Fire Department is seeking two new firefighters after one firefighter resigned to take a position in another department, and another plans to retire.

“It’s a normal application process,” Deputy Chief Cory Benge told Ottumwa Radio News. “An applicant submits an application and after that, we review the applications. If it looks like an applicant is qualified they will receive a letter telling them a time and a date that they are expected to appear for a physical agility test, written exam and an oral board interview.”

The oral board consists of the Chief, Deputy Chief and all three assistant chiefs.

“Everyone gets asked a series of approximately 10 questions, every candidate is asked the same 10 questions,” Benge added.

Benge says the only certification that is required at the time of the hire is an EMT certification, “Typically, we do all the fire training in house.”

More information on applying to be an Ottumwa Police Officer or Ottumwa Firefighter can be found by visiting the City of Ottumwa website.
