Ottumwa man gets 50 years in prison

(Ottumwa)— A 20 year old Ottumwa man will spend the next 50 years behind bars.  Dustin Armstrong was sentenced to 50 years in prison Monday in Wapello County District court in Ottumwa.

Armstrong was sentenced in connection with the brutal beating of a two year old Ottumwa boy a year ago on the city’s north side.

Ottumwa Police were called to a house on East Woodland after receiving a report of a two year old unconscious.  Armstrong was baby sitting for his girl friend at the time.  Armstrong claimed the boy’s injuries were the result of an accident.

The toddler was taken to Ottumwa Regional Health center, then airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa city.

Wapello County District Court Judge Joel Yates sentenced Armstrong to 50 years in prison after he agreed to a plea deal.
