An Ottumwa man faces an additional murder charge after allegedly assaulting a man at Casey’s on Sunday.
39-year-old Leon Stewart was arrested after police say he punched a man in the face, immediately rendering the victim unconscious. The victim fell to the ground and his head struck the concrete parking lot. Stewart was charged with willful injury and driving while barred.
The victim, identified as 49-year-old Grant Cochran of Ottumwa, was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center and then to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic in Iowa City. Cochran died on Wednesday as a result of the injuries sustained in the alleged assault.
Stewart has been additionally charged with second-degree murder. He is currently in the Wapello County Jail.
