Organizers Ready to Serve Thousands for Ottumwa’s Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner

We’re a week away from Thanksgiving and organizers are making preparations for Ottumwa’s Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

On Thanksgiving Day, individuals can grab a meal via curbside pickup at the Knights of Columbus (123 West Third Street) from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. These dinners can be delivered as well. The meals consists of turkey, dressing, potatoes and gravy, a vegetable, a roll, and dessert.

Organizer Pam Ward says just under 2,100 meals were served last year and she anticipates they will serve 2,400 dinners this Thanksgiving. To meet such a lofty goal, Ward says plenty of volunteers chip in.

“last year, we had 80 routes because the home delivered meals are broken into neighborhoods,” Ward says. “We try to keep the number fairly small because we want the food to be good, quality hot food when they get it.”

Those who want a meal delivered to them will have to call to make arrangements between now and Wednesday, November 24th. The information can be found on their Facebook page here:

Ward says around 100 volunteers helped out last year, but she will never turn down anyone that wants to help.

“Arrive by about 9:30 [on thanksgiving day] and we will have something for you to do,” Ward Says. “if you want to help with curbside, come a little before 11:00. we could always use help. There is always something to be done.”
