An Ottumwa man is facing criminal charges after an alleged assault in late July.
According to court records, at around 4:02 A.M. on July 29, 30 year old Darnell Keith Jones (no fixed address, separate documents state he is from Evansville, Indiana) became involved in an altercation with an unnamed woman near W. Second Street and Fairview Avenue in Ottumwa. Jones allegedly bit the victim on the center of her back after she refused to hand over her phone. Jones is then claimed to have placed his hands around the victim’s neck, squeezing until she had trouble breathing, before punching the victim in the right side of her back near the rib cage. The incident report notes that the victim had redness around the neck, teeth marks on her back and a red mark near her ribs consistent with the size of a fist.
Jones was arrested and charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury (a Class D Felony). He was taken to the Wapello County Jail where he later posted bond. A preliminary hearing is set for August 5th. A public defender has been appointed in his case.
As a reminder, a criminal charge is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
