OHS Softball, Baseball Drop Season-Opening Twin Bills

WEST DES MOINES, IA – New Ottumwa softball head coach Mandi Moore couldn’t have asked for a tougher debut, with her Bulldogs beginning the 2020 season with a doubleheader at defending Class 5A champion West Des Moines Valley. By the end of the night, OHS headed home feeling like they had let a pair of opportunities slip away.

#5 Ottumwa dropped two close games to the #7 Tigers, falling 7-5 in the opener before losing the nightcap 5-2. The Bulldogs had early leads in both games, only to see Valley put together late rallies.

In game one, both Ottumwa and Valley scored twice in the second inning, but OHS went ahead 3-2 in the third on an RBI hit from Anne Guest. That lead held until Valley rallied with two runs in the fifth inning, and added an insurance run in the sixth. Down to their last three outs, OHS came back with two in the top of the seventh, tying the game on an RBI single from Amber Shotts. In the bottom half of the frame, however, Valley’s Katie Newman hit a two-out, walkoff two-run home run.

In game two, Ottumwa struck quickly with a pair of first-inning runs, but only managed three more hits the rest of the game against Valley pitcher Hailey Etzel. Bulldog pitcher Ashton Brown shut down the Tigers for the first three innings, but a pair of OHS errors in the fourth allowed Valley to tie the game at two. The final rally came in the sixth inning, when Valley scored three runs with two out to set the final margin.

On the baseball diamond at Valley, Ottumwa pitching struggled in a pair of losses. The Tigers won game one 12-2 in five innings. In game two OHS rallied from an 8-2 deficit, cutting the VHS lead to 8-6, but then Valley pulled away for a 16-6 victory.

Both Ottumwa squads are back in action Wednesday for their home openers, taking on Ankeny. 1240 AM/102.7 FM KBIZ will broadcast the baseball doubleheader starting at 5:00, along with the live video stream on this website.
