The Ottumwa High baseball team saw its season come to an end Wednesday, falling 2-0 at home to West Des Moines Valley in the substate championship game. OHS ends its season at 25-16, one win short of a state tournament berth.
Bulldog starter Steven Wilson and Valley hurler Nicky Nelson matched each other pitch for pitch throughout the night, with neither senior allowing any earned runs. Errors, however, would prove to be Ottumwa’s undoing. Valley scored its first run in the top of the first when a single to the outfield was misplayed for an error. The other run scored in the top of the fourth for Valley, with the leadoff man in the inning reaching on an error before coming around to score.
Ottumwa still ends the season with a lot to be proud of. After starting out 1-6, the Bulldogs won 24 of their last 34 games. OHS also claimed four wins over teams that made the Class 4A state tournament, second-most of any 4A team that didn’t get to state.
