None Injured in Day’s 2nd Rollover Accident

By Jason Van Arkel, February 05, 2019

Three passengers escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon, after the car they were riding in slid off eastbound Highway 34 in Ottumwa and rolled down a steep embankment towards Greater Ottumwa Park. The vehicle appeared to suffer significant damage, but the three occupants were able to walk away from the crash.

The single-vehicle accident happened shortly after 2:00 Tuesday afternoon, as Ottumwa was feeling the effects of yet another winter storm. A mixture of sleet and freezing rain had been falling on and off since late in the morning, and a noticeable amount of sleet was falling at the accident site. The conditions may have contributed to the accident, although an official cause has not yet been released. The wreck itself did not impede traffic on Highway 34, but the presence of emergency vehicles on the side of the road slowed traffic for about half an hour.

This was the second rollover accident of the day in Ottumwa. A vehicle crashed at the 34/63 roundabout in Ottumwa just before 10:30 in the morning, although the occupants managed to escape serious injury in that wreck as well.
