New “Click It Or Ticket” Campaign Targets Nighttime Drivers

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will launch its annual “Click It Or Ticket” campaign on Monday, May 20th. The campaign utilizes a no-excuses enforcement to seat belt laws, issuing citations to any driver or passenger who is observed in a moving vehicle without being buckled up.

The Iowa DOT’s Office of Traffic and Safety, along with similar offices across the country, will join with law enforcement for a special “Border to Border” event on Monday, to kick off the Click It Or Ticket campaign. Border to Border targets nighttime drivers, since more than half of the fatalities that happen to unbuckled drivers and passengers occur at night.

“The Border to Border component of the Click It or Ticket campaign is important because it raises awareness about seat belt safety during the time when seat belts are least used – at night,” said NHTSA Region 7 Administrator Susan DeCourcy. “With an increased number of cars flooding the streets due to the Memorial Day holiday, it’s imperative we get the word out about the importance of seat belt safety.”

According to NHSTA data, more than 10,000 people lost their lives in 2017 in crashes where they were not wearing a seat belt, with over half killed at night. In addition, while Click It Or Ticket is a message for all drivers, officials hope to especially get the message out to men aged 18 to 34. Research shows men in that age group are far less likely to wear seat belts. Of the men killed in crashes in 2017, more than half (51%) were unrestrained. For women killed in crashes, 39 percent were not buckled up.

The NHTSA has been working with states on Click It or Ticket since 2003. Since that time, national seat belt use has increased from 79 percent to 89.6 percent. However, nearly 27.5 million Americans still don’t buckle up when they get in a vehicle.
