Memorial Park Controlled Burn Rescheduled

By Kyle Smith, April 15, 2019

The controlled burn at Memorial Park previously scheduled for last week has been rescheduled.

The burn, part of a project to maintain acres of oak savannah, is now scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16th.  Residents are advised to be cautious of visible issues caused by the smoke.  Residents should also avoid any outdoors activities if they live in the area near the park.

In 2016 the City of Ottumwa initiated a water quality improvement project through a program with the Iowa DNR and the State Revolving Fund.  Part of this project is the restoration of 9.5 acres of oak savannah in the northwest portion Memorial Park.  Maintenance of the oak savannah requires periodic prescribed burns.  Fire promotes the growth of native plants and controls the growth of unwanted woody and non-native vegetation.
