Man Involved in Ottumwa Standoff Charged

The male suspect that was involved in a standoff with Ottumwa police has been identified and charged.

Police say 55-year-old John Steinbach of Ottumwa was engaged with a physical confrontation with his live-in girlfriend Friday morning. Court records say Steinbach grabbed the victim by the throat and used a high powered rifle to hold her down on a bed.

Officers were called to 318 N. Pocahontas Street at 9:45 AM and a standoff ensued. Police at the scene say that Steinbach repeatedly ignored communication attempts by officers.

Evans Middle School, half a block away from the residence, went into lockdown and eventually dismissed students shortly before noon–at the behest of the police department.

Steinbach was eventually apprehended without incident around 7:00 Friday night.

Steinbach has been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was transported to the Wapello County Jail and is currently free on bond.
