Man Arrested Carrying Machete, Baseball Bat

By Ellis Codjoe, August 21, 2017

A man was arrested on the south side of Ottumwa Monday, following a scary situation for residents of one neighborhood.

Ottumwa Police Chief Tom McAndrew says police “received a call of a man running around the neighborhood and knocking on doors carrying a machete” shortly before Noon.

McAndrew says the man obtained a baseball bat before officers arrived on scene.

The incident occurred in the 800 block of Lee Avenue.

Ottumwa Police Sergeant Steve Kovacs was unsure if the man was making threats to the residents.

He says the man surrendered peacefully to officers when they arrived.

At least three homes in the neighborhood appear to have been damaged during the incident. Two of the homes were placarded before the incident occurred.

Kovacs says he is not sure if the man caused the damage or not. He adds that the investigation is ongoing and investigators will determine if the damage was a result of Monday’s incident.

Neighbors say the homes had been vandalized prior to Monday’s events.

Police arrested 49 year old Jim Ladouceur of Ottumwa, charging him with disorderly conduct pending a full investigation which could lead to additional charges.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
