Make Ottumwa Shine Week Kicks Off Sunday

By Kyle Smith, April 19, 2019

Ottumwa Residents have a chance to help clean up their communities beginning on Sunday.

Make Ottumwa Shine week starts on Sunday, April 21st, and goes until Saturday, April 27th.  Those interested can find an area to adopt and clean via the city’s website at You can reserve a location on the website or by calling the Recycling Center at (641) 683-0685.

Volunteers can pick up purple trash bags and latex gloves at the Recycling Center. Once the reserved area is clean, call the Recycling Center or the Health Department at (641) 683-0610 to let them know where to pick up the trash bags.  Additional information is available from the Recycling Center.

Make Ottumwa Shine is an excellent way to get involved with the social media #Trashtag challenge. The initiative has been encouraging thousands of people across the world to help clean up local streets, parks, and other public spaces. Users pick a local area close to them and
head down clean up litter and sort recyclables. They then post photos on social media using the hashtag #Trashtag to inspire others to do the same.
