Motorists traveling on Iowa 149/Business 63 in Ottumwa will have to find an alternative route starting in June.
The Iowa Department of Transportation says the pedestrian bridge on Ottumwa Street will be removed. The concrete girder bridge on West Park Boulevard, located half a mile north of the Ottumwa Street bridge, will be removed and replaced with a pretensioned, pretressed, beam bridge.
During the removal of the two bridges, Iowa 149/Business 63 will be closed to traffic, beginning Monday, June 1st. The Iowa DOT anticipates the work will keep the roadway closed until late June, weather permitting.
The stretch of road between 5th Street West and Lakeside Drive will be closed. The rest of Iowa 149/Business 63 will be accessible for local traffic.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution and obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area. Fines for moving violations in work zones are at least double. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert, allow sufficient space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
