A group of local veterans will be hosting an event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
“Patriots Day” will be held on Saturday, September 11th, starting at 8:00 AM at the Ottumwa Chapter of the Issac Walton League. The function is free to attend and the public is invited. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Don Lewis is an Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War. He says while September 11th will always be a solemn reminder of what happened 20 years ago, their event will honor first responders.
“our law enforcement, our first responders, our veterans Have all had some tough times. And we just want to try and say ‘thank you’ to them.”
Lewis says there will be door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, and a trap shooting contest during the event.
Lewis says he was serving during the fateful attacks 20 years ago and it’s a day he’ll never forget.
“It really changed my Life. it was a humbling event to see the vuneralbility of this country so I defintely reminisce every 9/11.”
Lewis says donations will be accepted during Patriots Day with the funds being used to help veterans in need.
