A local chiropractor accused of assaulting a minor he treated in February is now being sued by the child’s family, according to an attorney.

Bruce Lindberg, 62, was charged with assault stemming from a February 16 incident in his office. The victim was a ten-year-old boy.

The lawsuit was filed against Lindberg and his offices, Lindberg Chiropractic in Fairfield and Ottumwa Chiropractic in Ottumwa.

Ben Lynch, the family’s attorney, says on the day in question, the child accompanied an adult friend to Lindberg’s office but did not have an appointment. Lindberg allegedly took the boy into a private examination room without the family’s permission, instructed the child to remove his shirt, and began massaging the minor’s back with lotion.

After the massage, Lindberg allegedly hugged and kissed the child and told him he was “beautiful”, “adorable”, and “the prettiest boy in the world.”

Lynch says the boy told his parents about the incident and Lindberg apologized over the phone on February 17 when confronted by the child’s parents.

Lindberg, the lawsuit says, was previously criminally convicted of crimes related to inappropriate contact with children. Additionally, Lindberg’s chiropractic offices have been previously reprimanded or disciplined for conduct similar to the allegations described above.

The child and his family have since sought mental health services to cope with the incident, court documents say.

According to the lawsuit that was filed, the boy’s family seeks compensation for their injuries and damages and demands a trial by jury.

Lindberg pleaded not guilty to the assault charge he faces. A pretrial conference is scheduled for May 26.
