Lars Legvold, 71, of Oskaloosa passed away Monday, October 24, 2022, at the Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

Lars Christian Legvold, son of Samson and Charlotte (Cortner) Legvold, was born October 31, 1950, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was raised in Perry, Iowa, where he attended school through the 7th grade. He attended 8th grade in Grundy Center, where his father’s job relocated the family for a year before moving them to Oskaloosa, where he finished high school in 1969. Lar’s attended William Penn College after high school. He was drafted by the U.S. Army and was inducted on February 24, 1971. He served for almost two years, with ten months of that service overseas as a heavy vehicle driver. After returning to Iowa, Lars worked at Hy-Vee Supermarket, Ideal Manufacturing, Clow Valve Company, Lynn’s Poultry, Mich Coal Company, Bloom Builders, and the V.A. Hospital before he found his niche with the City of Oskaloosa in 1988. In the 22 years he worked for the street maintenance department, his favorite job with the city was running the street sweeper. He was a skilled snow-plow operator, too, and was the Snow Plow Rodeo Champion for three years when he represented Oskaloosa in Des Moines in the state-wide competition. Lars also served as a volunteer firefighter.

On October 1, 1993, Lars and Victoria “Vickie” Louise Catron were married. They had 15 happy years together before Vicki passed away on September 21, 2008. Lars was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the V.F.W., the N.R.A., the American Legion, and Edmundson Golf Course. In his free time, Lars enjoyed golf, slow-pitch softball, hunting, trapping, and collecting coins.

Lars’ family includes his sons: Michael B. (Janel) Legvold of Attica, Lars C. (Amy)Legvold Jr of Oskaloosa, and Carey J. (Amy) Legvold of Oskaloosa; his step-sons: Eddie (Jill) Pierson of Oskaloosa and Tony Pierson of Kansas City, MO; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Mike’s children: Paige (Seth) Bell of Oskaloosa and their children: Adison and Aliza, Austin (Maritza) Legvold of Ankeny and their children: Jayden and Lailana, and Chris (Marco) Collins; Lars Jr.’s children: Taylor Legvold and Kayla Legvold of Oskaloosa, and McKenna Legvold of Gardner, KS; Carey’s children: Jordan Legvold and Jakob Legvold of Waukee, Gabby Legvold of Cedar Rapids, and Jordan Mier of Oskaloosa; Eddie’s children: Cameron, Keagan, Dylan and Beckett Pierson; and Tony’s son, Kolby Pierson. His siblings also survive Lars: Curt Legvold of Oskaloosa, Chuck (Bonnie) Legvold of Aurora, IL, Sam (Susan) Legvold of Wetumpka, AL, and Leesha (Jake) McGee of Oskaloosa.

In addition to his parents, Lars was preceded in death by his wife, Vickie, his sister, Lauri Beth Odor, and two grandchildren: Tori and Carey Jr.

A funeral service for Lars will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 28, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Amy McGriff officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. The Oskaloosa Honor Guard will present military Honors. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will greet visitors from 5-7 p.m. at the chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to the Mahaska Health Foundation for the Serenity House or to the V.F.W.
