OSKALOOSA, IA – It’s time to announce the KTWA Athlete of the Week, brought to you by Pella Regional Therapy in Ottumwa. Physical, occupational, speech, and aquatic therapy, located at the Ottumwa YMCA.

The KTWA Athlete of the Week is: Oskaloosa swimmer, Sophia Dykstra. The senior placed second in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke at Tuesday’s Boone/Grinnell triple dual with times of 1:03.08 and 1:20.68, respectively. Dykstra also swam a personal best 35.75 in the 50 breaststroke Medley Relay, helping the Indians place third, and a 1:05.40 100 freestyle in the 400 free relay, where Oskaloosa finished fourth.

Indians Head Coach Makenzie Kauffman described her senior swimmer as, “a phenomenal leader for our team, as well as an incredible athlete. She strives for strength and technical precision in every single practice, lifting session, and meet. Sophia pushes herself and her teammates to be better in every way, whether that be in the pool, supporting teammates in the pool, in school, or in the community.”

Coach Kauffman also shared some of Dykstra’s personal best times and goals for her senior season. Her PR 100 breaststroke is a 1:19.55, which she earned at the Little Hawkeye Conference swim meet last fall, placing her 3rd on the program’s “All-Time Top 10” for this event. Her goal for this season is to hit a 1:18.00 or lower, and she’s already posted time of 1:21.15 at Ottumwa last week and a 1:20.68 with an extremely well-raced 2nd place finish Tuesday night in Boone.

Sophia also swam a 1:03.00 and 1:03.08 in the 100 freestyle in our first two meets of the season, with a goal of going sub-1:00 her senior season. Dykstra currently holds the 5th spot the Oskaloosa program “Top Ten” for this event.  She is also anxiously awaiting the chance to compete in the 50 free to see what she can accomplish in that event during her senior season.

Ottumwa Radio’s Athlete of the Week program is made possible by the generosity of Pella Regional Therapy in Ottumwa, and the cooperation of our area high schools. This is a great accomplishment and one to be very proud of. Please join us in congratulating Sophia Dykstra. All of us at the Ottumwa Radio Group wish you continued success as the season moves forward!
