A Knoxville man is behind bars after Ottumwa police say he chatted with a child on the internet earlier this year and sexually abused her when they met.
According to court documents, 43-year-old Demetrius Smith conversed with a 12-year-old girl on social media in January. The two later made plans to meet. The victim told Smith she was 16, police say.
Court filings say Smith and the victim met in the early morning hours of January 8th on Vine Street in Ottumwa. Smith and the victim then engaged in a prohibited sex act which Smith admitted to later. Smith also revealed to authorities that he brought marijuana for him and the victim to smoke.
Smith was arrested on Friday, July 16th, and charged with second-degree sex abuse, distributing a drug near a school, and enticing a minor, all felonies.
Smith is currently in the Wapello County Jail where he is being held on a $50,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 23rd.
