A southeast Iowa man’s bizarre request was granted when he committed a crime in the Wapello County Jail shortly after his release.

39-year-old Gregorio Hernandez, Jr. of Keokuk was being released from jail on a 5th-degree theft charge Friday afternoon. The criminal complaint says that within minutes of being released, Hernadez grabbed a fire extinguisher and proceeded to spray it around the lower level of the Wapello County Law Center.

It will cost approximately $10,000 to clean up the law center. Hernandez says he perpetrated the crime in order to return to jail according to the complaint.

Hernandez has been charged with first-degree criminal mischief and willful disturbance. He is currently in the Wapello County Jail on a $10,000 cash/surety bond.
