Kenneth Hazelwood


Kenneth Michael Hazelwood, 62, of Ottumwa, died at 1:50 p.m. February 25, 2022 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines.

He was born July 21, 1959 in Ottumwa to William D. and Bonnie Louise Taylor Hazelwood. He married Valerie Dawn Jefferson March 24, 1979 and she preceded him in death on June 6, 2021.

A 1978 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force. Mike had worked at Lowenburg Bakery, for over 15 years at Rubbermaid in Centerville, delivering newspapers for the Ottumwa Courier and at John Deere Ottumwa Works. He and his wife, Valerie were volunteers for the Red Cross, trained in national disasters.

He enjoyed coaching Little League baseball, fishing and spending time with his grandkids.

Surviving is his children, Scott (Sarah) Hazelwood, Kendra Hazelwood and Kevin Hazelwood all of Ottumwa; 5 grandchildren, Austin, Haley, Amelia, Colin and Alivia; a great-grandson, Charlie; his mother, Bonnie Hazelwood of Ottumwa; four brothers, Will (Connie) Hazelwood, Richard (Lennice) Hazelwood, John (Trena) Hazelwood, all of Ottumwa, James “Jim” (Toni) Hazelwood of Riverside; three sisters, Karen Johnson of Tennessee, Marybeth Ott of Boone and Carol (Chris) Storto of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bill; a sister, Kathy Lukehart; a grandson, Aaron Arguello.

Visitation will be open after 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 1st at Reece Funeral Home. Military honors will be conducted at 4 p.m.

Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present to greet friends following until 7 p.m. Cremation will follow the visitation.

Private inurnment will be in Ottumwa Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the family.
