Susan Kay Hazzard, 70, of Chillicothe died January 15, 2023 at 1:37 a.m. at home.

She was born January 8, 1953 in Ottumwa to Otto Grant and Josephine “Jo” Myers Troxel. Kay married Dan Hazzard on February 25, 1984.

A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Kay had worked at TG&Y in Kansas City, at the American Legion in Bloomfield and at the grocery store in Moravia.

Kay served on the Chillicothe City Council. She enjoyed camping and cooking and she made the best fried chicken and potato salad. Kay enjoyed dancing and was known for her “spicy” personality. She loved her family, especially her dogs and her grandchildren.

Surviving is her husband, Dan; their children, Dianna (Kenneth) Beshears of Cowgill, MO, Jennifer (Shawn) Shortell of Johnston, Anita Hazzard of Blue Springs, MO, Dana (Jason) Crow of Lee’s Summit, MO and Danny Hazzard Jr. of Belton, MO; 18 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers, Charles Troxel of Denver, CO, Jay Troxel of Ottumwa, Stephen (Lorena) Troxel of Ottumwa and David Grant (Sue) Troxel of Mount Vernon, IL; 2 sisters, Linda Lalli and Donna Rae Adcock both of Mount Vernon, IL.

Kay was preceded in death by her father, Otto Troxel; her mother and step-father, Josephine and Albert Hanshaw; a brother, George Franklin Troxel and a granddaughter, Kinsley Rose Shortell.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 18th, at Reece Funeral Home with Chaplain Gary Brooks officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. The family will be present to greet friends one hour prior to the service Wednesday. Cremation will follow the services.

Memorials may be made to the family.
