The city of Ottumwa announced Friday morning that the Jefferson Street bridge will be closed for the majority of next week. City of Ottumwa Public Works crews will close the bridge to all traffic at approximately 9:00 am Monday morning. In addition, the section of Mill Street that passes under the Jefferson Street bridge will be briefly closed while crews work overhead.
The closure will allow crews to conduct a regular structural engineering inspection. These inspections are required by the Iowa Department of Transportation. They must be completed for the bridge and the city to be in compliance with state regulations, and to qualify for bridge funding. Motorists should plan ahead for cross-town travel delays and seek alternate routes around the work zone.
Assuming good weather, the Jefferson Street bridge should re-open by the end of the week.
