Man dies in crash at Rochester and 149


Update: According to a crash report provided by the Iowa State Patrol, 92 year old John E. Hunt of Ottumwa has died as a result of his injuries in this crash.

Hunt was riding as the front seat passenger in a vehicle driven by 56 year old Teresa Vanderpol, of Ottumwa, who also suffered injuries. Also injured in the Vanderpol vehicle was 66 year old John A Hunt of Ottumwa.

The crash report says that the Vanderpol vehicle failed to yield when making a left turn onto Rochester Street from Southbound Highway 149.

Vanderpol turned left in front of a pickup driven by a 16 year old Ottumwan.

Teresa Vanderpol, John E Hunt and the minor driver of the 2nd vehicle were all transported to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center by ambulance. John A Hunt was taken to the hospital by private vehicle.

Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat-belt.

Original Story:

Ottumwa Firefighters rushed to the scene of an accident at Highway 149 and Rochester Road Friday afternoon.

The crash was reported at shortly before 12:30 PM. A minivan apparently turned in front of a northbound pickup. Both vehicles involved suffered extensive front end damage.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove at least one person from the minivan.

Two people were transported to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center. Two others refused treatment.

The Iowa State Patrol will lead an investigation into the incident.
