Iowa’s Top Haunted House Opens Tonight in Ottumwa

A haunted house in Ottumwa that was hailed as the scariest in Iowa in 2019 makes its debut Friday night.

The Mayhem Haunted House, located at the Wapello County Expo Grounds (13011 120th Avenue), opens its doors to scare those willing to walk through it at 7:00 PM and will stay open until midnight. The spooky attraction will be open every Friday and Saturday leading up to Halloween.

Lynn Dively helps run the haunted house. She also gets into character to do some of the scaring. Dively talked about why haunted houses are so appealing.

“I don’t know if it’s just a time, a small period in a person’s day that they [visitors] can go and kind of forget everything else and just let it all go.”

It costs $10 per person to walk through the Mayhem Haunted House, which was named the number one haunted house two years ago at Tickets can only be purchased at the Expo Grounds and credit cards will be accepted.
