Jim Parker, the son of former University of Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Parker, will serve as honorary captain when the Hawkeyes host Iowa State Saturday in Kinnick Stadium.
Jim Parker and his wife, Denise, reside in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, with their children, Roxie, Jasmine and Bridgette. Jim is president and owner of Diama-Shield. As an undergraduate at Michigan State, Jim served as a team manager, working close to his father while Norm was a Spartan assistant coach. Jim earned his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State and his JD degree from Wayne State.
Norm Parker served as Iowa’s defensive coordinator for 13 seasons, joining Kirk Ferentz’ original staff in 1999. Norm served in the coaching profession for 48 years. He passed away on January 13, 2014. Following the 2011 season, Parker was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). He was a finalist for the Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2004 and 2005.
Under Parker’s direction, Iowa ranked among the top 10 nationally in rushing defense five times. Iowa ranked in the top 10 in scoring defense three times from 2008-11. Iowa won 85 games from 2002-11, including 50 Big Ten games. The Hawkeyes earned a share of the Big Ten title in both 2002 and 2004 and tied for second in 2009.
Jim Parker will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for Saturday’s pregame coin toss. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game, and on the sidelines during the contest.
