February 2, 2014 – Ottumwa, Iowa – The public is invited to an informational meeting about the upcoming Iowa Avenue Reconstruction Project. The meeting will be Thursday, February 5th at 5:30 PM at the Ottumwa Elks Lodge at 414 S. Iowa Avenue.
The meeting is for sharing information with the community about the project’s construction schedule, work zone traffic changes and street closings. With amount of industry in the vicinity, there will be a considerable amount of coordination with nearby businesses to ensure continuity. The meeting is open to the public; residents and businesses in the project area are especially invited to attend and learn more.
The project is a complete full-width, full-depth reconstruction of Iowa Avenue from Highway 34 to Main Street. There will be a dedicated center turn lane from Highway 34 to the industrial park at K Avenue/Hayne Street. There will be a significant amount of underground utility work on this project including all new storm water and sanitary sewer lines and a new water main. The contractor for the Iowa Avenue Reconstruction Project is Portzen Construction of Dubuque, Iowa, with the low bid of $2,596,446.
Major funding for this project includes nearly $1 million from the City of Ottumwa (including $460,000 from the Local Option Sales Tax) and a $ 1.1 million RISE Grant through the Iowa Department of Transportation. The Ottumwa Water Works will be investing half a million dollars in new infrastructure and Wapello County will reimburse the City $48,000 for work on the portion of Iowa Ave outside City limits.
