Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Iowa High School Athletic Association made the decision that every team in Iowa will make the postseason. On Saturday afternoon, area teams covered by the Ottumwa Radio Group found out their first opponents.
Each class has been split into pods of two or three teams. If a pod has two teams, each will receive a first round bye and play each other in the second round. Pods with three teams will have one team that gets a bye to the second round and will face the winner of the remaining two teams.
In 4A, the Ottumwa Bulldogs will travel north to square off against the Little Hawks of Iowa City High School in Pod #7. The Bulldogs will be looking for their first victory of the season. The winner will face Iowa City West, which has a bye.
Davis County is in Pod #11 in Class 2A. The Mustangs will play West Burlington/Notre Dame in Bloomfield. Earlier this season, the two teams were scheduled to play in West Burlington but the game was cancelled due to Covid. The victor of next Friday’s match up will advance to the second round to face Williamsburg.
The Van Buren Warriors will look to avenge a loss from the regular season. They will travel to Mediapolis in Pod #10 in Class 1A. The winner will play West Branch. Mediapolis beat Van Buren in the first game, 41-6.
Also in 1A, Cardinal and Pekin had to cancel a regular season match up because of the virus. The two schools will face off in the opening round of Pod #11 at Pekin. The winner will take on Sigourney-Keota in round two.
