Icy Conditions Complicate Friday Morning Commute

By Ellis Codjoe, December 15, 2017

Freezing drizzle overnight spawned multiple car accidents Friday morning in and around Ottumwa.

At approximately 5:30 this morning, first responders were called to Highway 63 near Eddyville on reports of multiple vehicles in the ditch, one of which had rolled over. Scanner traffic indicated that nobody was injured in the accident.

Not long after, dispatchers informed police of a minor car accident on Highway 34 near JBS Ottumwa. A pickup lost control on the icy bridge and appears to have struck the guard rail. No injuries were reported.

At 6:45 A.M., firefighters and sheriff deputies were called to a rollover car accident near the Pennsylvania Avenue exit on Highway 63. The driver of a pickup lost control while crossing a bridge and rolled his vehicle into the ditch. The driver was injured, however, the extent of his injuries is not currently known.

Minutes later, Ottumwa firefighters were called to Highway 34 at the Vine Street on-ramp for another single vehicle car accident. The driver appears to have suffered only minor injuries.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is laying ice melt on highways. Officials say to slow down and give yourself extra time to get to your destination Friday morning.
