An investigation was launched after human remains were discovered in rural Mahaska County on Tuesday.
The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office says human skeletal remains were found by hunters near the 2700 block of Whitwell Avenue at approximately 11:25 AM.
The Iowa Divison of Criminal Investigation was contacted to assist in the investigation. According to the sheriff’s office, preliminary findings indicate that the deceased took their own life and there is no danger to the public.
The identity and gender of the remains are unknown and the investigation is ongoing. The sheriff’s office says the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is assisting with the investigation as well.
