PLEASANT HILL, IA – Ottumwa senior golfer Joe Hammer and junior Cale Leonard will advance to the Iowa High School boys state golf tournament Friday. With a two-over round of 74 Monday at the site of the Class 4A District Tournament, Glynns Creek in Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Hammer earned Medalist honors, two strokes ahead of the field. Leonard finished tied for second with two other golfers, however with their teams being in the top three on the overall leader board, Leonard gets the nod as the second highest individual golfer, securing the state tournament berth. The junior shot a four-over, 76.
Ottumwa finished tied for sixth in the team standings at 337 with Davenport Assumption. The host, Pleasant Valley, won the District with a 316, followed by Wahlert (321) and Linn-Marr (327). Those three teams advance to the State Tournament as well. In other individual standings, Ottumwa junior Trent Grooms shot a 91, junior Tyse Barker a 96, senior Mitch Wood 102, and senior Trae Swartz 106.
This year’s 36-hole Fall State Tournament will take place this Friday and Saturday at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. Hammer finished tied for 19th (+23) in last Fall’s State Tournament at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.
