In a ruling released Wednesday afternoon, Judge Shawn Showers denied an accused Fairfield teenager’s request to have his case moved to juvenile court.

17-year-old Jeremy Goodale is accused of killing Nohema Graber, a Fairfield High School Spanish teacher. Goodale has been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony.

In a hearing last month, Goodale’s lawyers provided the testimony of a clinical psychologist who said Goodale was a good candidate for rehabilitation and recommended the court transfer Goodale’s case to juvenile court.

The State, however, said the juvenile system has limited resources, and given Goodale’s age and the severity of the offenses, there would not be enough time to rehabilitate Goodale. A juvenile can only be held until his 18th birthday regardless of his treatment status.

Showers said in the adult system, an offender would be required to appear before a parole board to demonstrate rehabilitation before his potential release.

Goodale’s pretrial conference remains scheduled for August 1 and his trial is set to take place on August 23.
