Richard Eugene Durflinger or Gene as he was known to his family and friends, was born on May 6, 1942, in Ottumwa, IA to Richard and Mary Hunter Durflinger. He attended school in Eldon graduating with the class of 1960. Shortly after graduation he was united in marriage to Linda Major and the two became the proud parents of three daughters: Cindy, Suzanne, and Gena. Gene and Linda had many years together before life eventually took them in different directions. Gene worked several jobs early in life, including the Rock Island Railroad until its closing in 1980. He then began working at the Libertyville Quick Shop for his brother Tom where he became friends with many of the clients who passed through the doors over his many years there. Gene was someone who found comfort at home, “puttering” and “tinkering” with his yard or in his garden. He loved animals and always had something to care for around the property. Gene also enjoyed farming with his brothers and nephews. Even though Gene may have been known as a private man, he always looked forward to visits from his family. He loved to hear about their lives, their adventures, and even their hardships. He had a big heart and a gentle soul that will be missed by his family and the many friends he made along the way.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents.

Left to honor his memory are his children, Cindy (Jim) Elder of Eldon, IA, Suzanne (Steve) Streeby of Eldon, IA, and Gena (Dave) Becker of Humbolt, IA; five grandchildren, Amber Elder, Samantha Manusuthakis, Cody Streeby, Kaitlyn Streeby, and Matthew Streeby; five great grandchildren, Emma, Zed, Easton, Bryce, and Ryker; three siblings, Terry (Patti) Durflinger, Stephen (Janice) Durflinger, and
Tom (Denise) Durflinger, as well as many extended family and friends.
