Gary Keith Johnson, 78, of Ottumwa died July 15, 2022 at home.

He was born January 3, 1944 in Harrisburg Township in Hillsboro, IA to Max and Naomi Watson Johnson. He married Vicki Veatch on May 22, 1966.

He was a 1962 graduate of Stockport High School, 1964 graduate of Southeastern Community College, 1966 graduate of Northeast Missouri State College and a graduate of National Graduate Trust School at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Gary served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1970. He had worked at Drish, Zimmerman & Reinmund CPA firm from 1970 to 1976 and South Ottumwa Savings Bank from 1976 to 2011 where he was the Senior Vice President and head of the Trust Department.

He was the past president of the Y.M.C.A. board, was on the United Way Board, Ottumwa Progress Inc. Board and American Home Finding Board. He was a member of South Ottumwa Boosters Club, Noon Lions Club, TENCO Foundation, Ottumwa A Club, past treasurer of Ottumwa Area Development Corporation and a trustee at First United Methodist Church.

Gary coached Pee Wee and Little League Baseball at Midwest Field in Ottumwa. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing baseball, slow pitch softball, basketball and golf. He loved the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. He loved playing cards, especially Poker, enjoyed fishing and has had many years of going to Canada’s Red Lake with a group of friends.

Surviving is his wife, Vicki; two sons, Scott (Wendella) Johnson of Timnath, CO and Eric (Bridget) Johnson of West Des Moines; four grandchildren, Jacob, Addy, Cole and Avery Johnson; one great grandchild on the way; two sisters, Judy (Jack) Barnett of Firestone, CO and Patty Anderson of Fuquay-Varina, NC; and a sister-in-law, Linda Johnson of Colorado Springs, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stanley and Charles Johnson; a brother-in-law, Ron Anderson; and a sister-in-law, Judy Johnson.

Visitation will begin after 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 19th at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 20th at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Altmaier officiating. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. For those unable to attend, you may watch the service live on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Cremation will follow the services.

Inurnment will be in Spencer Cemetery in Stockport, IA at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21st.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to TENCO Foundation or Ottumwa A Club.
