Freshmen Orientation for OHS

OTTUMWA—Ottumwa High School freshmen will have the school to themselves the day before the first day of school. That day has been set aside for Freshmen Orientation. While not a new concept in Iowa, this is the first year it has been done in Ottumwa.

OHS freshmen will attend school on Tuesday, August 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students who ride the bus will follow the two-hour delay schedule. Students will receive a free lunch, T-shirt and duffle bag. They will meet their advisor, find their locker, and go through their schedule. Student Council will also lead some team building activities. “The goal is to increase their comfort level by giving freshmen the run of the building,” said Principal Mark Hanson.

Hanson’s staff has sent notifications to parents and students in a variety of ways, including letters, announcements during meetings, and media.

“This will be a great day,” said Hanson. “Students will get a lot out of it.”
