Week three of high school football in Iowa marks the start of district play, except in Class 4A. Here’s a quick look at the four area games featured on the Ottumwa Radio Sports Network.
Marshalltown @ Ottumwa (4A): this was a district game the past two seasons, but not in 2014. Ottumwa lost to a senior-laden Marshalltown team two seasons ago, but racked up over 300 rushing yards against a one-win Bobcats team last year in a 28-17 Bulldog triumph. OHS is 2-0 coming in, while MHS is 1-1 and coming off a loss where they allowed Newton to rush for over 300 yards. (7:30 on 1240 KBIZ)
CMB @ Davis County (2A): starting the season against quality 3A opponents (Fairfield and Chariton) did Davis County no favors on the scoreboard, and now they open district play with CMB, one of only two teams in that district that’s won both of its games. The Raiders have thrown for 420 yards and rushed for 414, so the Mustangs have to stop both the pass and the run to turn around their 0-2 start. (7:30 on 104.3 KRKN)
Lone Tree @ Van Buren (A): Both teams are 1-1 after winning their openers and losing last week. The Warriors had to overcome a 28-0 district loss to the Lions last year, on the road to Van Buren’s first-ever playoff berth. It’s a contrast of styles, since Lone Tree relies on the ground game but Van Buren has a better passing attack. (7:00 on 92.7 KTWA)
Danville @ Pekin (A): the Panthers, ranked fifth in Class A, have rolled over both of their opponents this season. Interesting stat: Pekin has a district-best 355 yards passing on only seven completions, an average of over 50 yards per catch. Danville got past Highland in its season opener, but got hammered 39-3 by Central Lee last week. (7:00 on 101.5 Kiss FM)
