Floyd Oscar Covert, age 88, of Blakesburg died on September 3, 2022 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born March 26, 1934 in Ottumwa to James Oscar and Vetra Melrose Padget Covert. A life-long resident of Wapello County, he was a member of the Ottumwa High School class of 1953. He married Patricia Jean Burton November 24, 1953. Out of this marriage was born two sons, Dennis and Mark.

Floyd is survived by his wife; son Dennis (Sheila) Covert of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania; granddaughter, Melissa (Ryan) Cloyd of Damascus, Maryland; grandson, Jeremiah Covert of Boone, Iowa; grandchildren, Alicia and Jacob Cloyd; a sister, Vicki Rath (Ron Holtzinger) of Ottumwa, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark; his parents, three brothers, Bill Covert, Bob Covert, Jerry Covert, and three sisters, Betty Durham, Bea Yates, and Sheri Guthrie.

Floyd was raised a farm boy in hard times and liked to tell the story of hiring out to neighboring farmers as a live-in farm hand at 14 milking cows and doing field work, then giving all his earnings to his folks to help the family. He was proud of that. He was a long-time employee of Lowenberg Bakery, then later at John Deere until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of Empire Masonic Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M. as well as was a lifelong union member belonging, at different times, to the Bakery and Confectionery Workers’ International, Teamsters, and United Auto Workers Local # 74.

He had traveled throughout the United States and some of Europe. There was no place on earth he would rather be than standing in his own yard, coffee cup in hand, looking at his crops, garden, and surrounding scenery. He loved to mushroom hunt and had many secret spots scattered around southern Iowa. He spent many hours with his best friend Carl Valentine discussing how to prepare and preserve their finds.
