Fisherman Dies at Rathbun Lake

UPDATE: The fisherman has been identified as 79-year-old Ralph Rosenberger of Indianola.

A man died while fishing at Rathbun Lake last week.

At 1:43 PM on Friday, the Appanoose County Law Enforcement Center received a 911 call concerning an unresponsive person in the water near the Island View Boat Ramp on the lake.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene to find boaters attending to and performing CPR on a 79-year-old man who has not been identified.

Life saving measures were attempted by the emergency crew but they proved unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation performed by the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office revealed the man was seen fishing in from a boat. Approximately five minutes later, witnesses saw the fisherman floating in the river unresponsive.

The man’s body will be transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine cause of death.

The man’s identity was not disclosed in the press release from the sheriff’s office.
