A Fairfield man was found guilty by a Louisa County jury in a case involving the 2020 death of his girlfriend.

37-year-old Derrick Maynard was originally charged with second-degree murder. Last week, Maynard was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, a Class C felony.

Authorities say in May 2020 Maynard intentionally crashed a 26-foot U-Haul truck into a vehicle driven by 29-year-old Megan Reid of Fairfield. The wreck occurred in Columbus Junction. Reid died from injuries sustained in the crash.

A passenger in Reid’s car, 57-year-old Steven Scotton of Fairfield was injured in the collision.

According to investigators, data recovered from the U-Haul truck shows the accelerator was fully depressed immediately prior to colliding with Reid’s Chevy Cobalt. The truck was traveling at 30 mph.

Maynard faces up to 10 years in prison. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 30th.
