Bentonsport Heritage Day

September 12, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

How about a covered wagon ride to an era of steamboat hotels, handmade goods, live music, and a cast of characters from the 1850s? Button up your historical wear (optional) and join in the fun September 12 in Bentonsport from 10 am to 5 pm. Except for six foot social distancing, mask use (in the shops and covered wagon) and hand sanitizer, it will be just like the good old days. Signage on J-40 will navigate visitors to vehicle parking.

Along Bentonsport Riverside Park, stroll through the shops, watch artisans and crafters at work, and visit with the proprietors of the Mason House. Try walking on stilts at the Odd Fellas Woodshop, or listen to fiddler Tom Shadonix at the Greef General Store. Be sure to visit the new Greef House Gallery. A food vendor will serve an array of hot sandwiches, sides and drinks that can be enjoyed at tables near the gazebo. Strolling musician John Boyer will play tunes from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Meet the curator of the Odd Fellows Museum, Michelle Heckart. She is the first woman officer in the Odd Fellows Sovereign Grand Lodge of the world (including the 200 years of Odd Fellows existence in North America). She’ll present artifacts to visitors in a tent across from the shops and share how the Odd Fellows helped communities in the 1800s care for widows and orphans and bury the dead. The Odd Fellows Museum, located in the second floor above the Odd Fellas Woodshop, will also be open for tours at the south end of the building.

Want a ride from one side of the village to the other? Rick Coffman of Douds is bringing his covered wagon and Haflinger horses to give a free tour of the village or transport visitors from one end to the other. Board the wagon near the pedestrian iron bridge.

This event is sponsored by the Bentonsport Activity Committee and is supported by: The Artisan Co-op, Greef House Gallery, Greef General Store/Addie May Fudge, Iron and Lace, Odd Fellas Woodshop and The She Shed, as well as Van Buren County Conservation. All shops, museums and historical Bentonsport Presbyterian Church will be open, as well as the scenic Bentonsport Campground along the river.
